Cathédrale de Chartres - 1857

Photography byCharles Nègre
Little story

A French photographer and pioneer in the use of photography, he went down in history because of his artistic genius and the universality of his work. Trained as a painter with such teachers as Ingres and Delaroche, he was encouraged to use photography as a tool for the study of painting. Contrary to other painters who adopted photography as their single form of expression, Nègre never stopped painting, and even went on to combine both mediums. As can be observed on this photograph, since he wasn’t able to capture the light the way he wanted to, he painted the candle flames by hand.
